The Reward God Never Misses

"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord." —1 Corinthians 15:58, NKJV

Perfect attendance. “A” honor roll. First chair. Student of the year. Best classroom behavior. Best athlete.

You guessed it—I’m describing Award Day, the day schools across the land present ribbons, pendants, certificates, plaques, and trophies to honor their highest-achieving students. I made it a point to attend every Award Day while my children were in school. But each time the list was read, and their names were not always called, a twinge of disappointment surged through me.

When my children’s names weren’t always called to receive an award, did that mean I had failed as a mother? Absolutely not.

No matter how much I longed for my children to be recognized on Award Day, the true drive for success had to come from within them. My husband and I could support them with our presence, encourage them daily, and remind them to strive for excellence. But the desire to be honored for their achievements had to be theirs, not ours.

So, as another school year comes to an end, do not be discouraged if your child’s name—or the name of a young person you care about—is not called on Award Day. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, guardian, teacher, mentor, or simply someone faithfully pouring into the next generation, remember this: God sees every seed of faith, resilience, and perseverance you plant. And in His kingdom, your labor is never in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Father, thank You for allowing me to invest in the lives of the children You’ve entrusted to me—academically, spiritually, and in every area of growth. Give me wisdom and strength to guide them well, and may I always remember that my labor is never in vain in Your sight. Amen
